Project Timeline
We are currently accepting landowners for treatment in 2025!
Site Visit – Initial visit to get a look at the property and hemlocks. On this site visit, we will gather the information necessary to provide you with a quote for the cost of survey and treatment. We will gather information about the number and size of the hemlocks, as well as the overall health of them. If they are more unhealthy, we will recommend a different treatment plan than if they are healthier. You can be present if you wish but do not have to be. The initial site visit is NOT the survey.
Quote- We will email you the estimated cost of survey and treatment. If you agree to this cost, we will send you an official quote and landowner agreement to sign. These documents must be signed and returned before you are officially able to receive a survey or treatment. The quote is split into survey and treatment cost with a total at the bottom. Once we receive both these forms, we will put you on the list to be surveyed this winter.
Survey- Survey typically happens between November and April. Survey entails tagging each tree that was agreed upon in the quote with a metal or plastic tag depending on size, taking DBH measurements, and gathering coordinates. We use this survey information during treatment. After the survey you will be billed for the survey plus the cost of chemical.
Treatment- Typically happens May-October in which we treat each tree based on its size with the correct method and amount of chemical. We will only be treating trees that are healthy enough to take up chemical. Treatment will be with imidacloprid unless otherwise agreed upon to use dinotefuran. A final invoice for the treatment total will be sent through mail.
Treatment Methods
The applicators will use imidacloprid to inject trees over 5 inches DBH (diameter at breast height) and basal bark trees under 5 inches DBH. With the pesticide and application rate that the Muskegon Conservation District utilizes it will take about 12 – 18 months before the imidacloprid reaches the canopy of the trees and begins to control the adelgids. The insecticide will persist in the tree’s canopy and control HWA for at least five to seven years.
If the trees are declining from HWA, we may recommend treatment using dinotefuran. If we are able to use it at preferred mix rates, dinotefuran takes about two weeks to get throughout the tree and provides the hemlock protection for about a year. We typically run into max application rates quickly with this chemical so protection time may vary. This is something that we would discuss after the initial site visit before the quote is signed.
Individual Landowner Sign-ups
If you are an individual landowner interested in treatment, please fill out all of the information in the link provided above.
Association/Property Manager Sign-ups
If you are in an association or looking to sign up multiple properties owned by multiple individuals for the for hire program, we suggest designating a lead point of contact. We will also need the point of contact to email Lance McCarty at lance.mccarty@macd.org with a map of the properties and a list of the following information of individuals interested in treatment: name, phone number, email address, and parcel address.
